"I kill ju."
"Ji?"
"Ju."
"Ji?"
"Ju."
"Ji, with what?" Kiva asked, grinning broadly now that Wain had finally given in and agreed to play a round of the game. He and Stella were walking home with her that day.
Wain thought for a second, then grinned wickedly and said, "Orochimaru."
Stella broke up laughing.
"Ewww! Not the snake bastard!" Kiva squeaked shuddering.
Wain laughed and said, "What? Don't like snakes hmm?"
"No…" Kiva whined, laughing weakly at her own fear, "And you hush!"
"Owwie! What'd I do!?" she yelped.
"Pissed me off," Kiva laughed, "You know I've hated snakes ever since…" She trailed off, looking about with a confused look on her face.
"Ever since what hmm?" Wain prodded.
Kiva looked at him and her confused look deepened. She looked to Stella and shook her head.
"I…I think I was almost s-strangled and bitten by… Mando a while ago…" she stuttered.
"You were hmm?" Wain asked in surprise.
Kiva nodded.
"Wait…you were bitten remember? I was there," Stella said, getting a strange feeling of recollection, "Just by a regular ginebig though." *snake*
Kiva looked at her curiously.
Stella nodded and reached out, rolling Kiva's sleeve up. She pointed out two small circular scars on the top of her shoulder.
"That's where he bit you," she said.
Kiva shivered and shook her head, "Just…never mind, it's too…too weird."
The others followed her in silence down the Jaycee park gravel until Wain looked up and cursed under his breath.
Stella looked at him curiously then followed his gaze to a scraggly tree by the lawn décor business.
"What the hell?" Kiva muttered.
"Holy Andegag!" Stella said. *plural form of crows*
"Lot o' birdies," Kiva agreed, looking up at the tree in amazement.
It was true; the dead tree was a writhing mass of black. Over fifty ravens and crows were perched in its bows or sitting underneath it. All were nearly silent except for the rustling of their feathers and the scratch of their talons against bark.
"Uh…should we go to the other side of the road?" Kiva asked.
"No, they won't hurt us. They are just birds after all hmm," Wain said, looking under the brim of his Akatsuki hat.
Kiva glanced at Stella, who shrugged, then nodded, "Ok."
As they got closer to the birds, contrary to Wain's assuring words, they began getting restless. As the trio began walking by, some actually strutted along behind them.
"Sarayah..." Kiva heard a mind think, and it wasn't Stella's.
"Sarayah, Sarayah, Sarayah," it repeated in an awed whisper.
Kiva shook her head and blocked her mind, giving Stella the small hand signal that she wouldn't be able to contact Kiva through their mind link.
Stella gave her the return signal, meaning she understood and was blocking her own mind.
Kiva glanced behind her and looked warily at the others. What unnerved her was that Sarayah was Laura's secret name in their stories.
"Once we cross the road we'll be fine hmm," Wain muttered as they got to the curb.
Stella looked both ways and said, "Now."
The trio bolted across the highway, leaving the birds behind.
"That was really weird," Kiva muttered, putting down her mental shields.
"Yeah," Stella agreed.
The three walked on in silence again. Suddenly, Stella yelled, "SQUIRREL!" A fat gray ball of fur had zipped past them to the safety of a tree, catching the little Ojibway’s interest.
Kiva rolled her eyes and smiled. Wain chuckled and said, "I guess you still remember those huh Stel? They were your fav…" He stopped, catching himself.
"How'd you know that?" Stella questioned carefully.
"Uh…just a lucky guess hmm," he answered nervously.
Stella persisted questioning him but he held fast and refused to answer.
"He's hiding something…" Stella thought, "I think he knows more about us then he needs to."
"Ya think!?" Kiva thought back, "That's why I'm still not willing to trust him 100%."
"Well uh…how much farther from here hmm?" Wain asked after a while, adjusting the wrappings on his hands.
"A long way," Kiva said simply.
"Great…" Wain muttered.
"Why? Got a hot date or something?" Kiva teased.
"Ha! I wish!" Wain chuckled humorlessly, adjusting his headband, obviously distracted.
Stella glanced at Kiva and shrugged. After a minute, she tapped Wain on the shoulder saying, "Tag! You're it!" Instantly, she bolted off like a frightened doe.
"Not for long Stel hmm!" Wain laughed, running after her and forcing Kiva to keep up.
Wain and Stella ran for four good minutes, ducking, dodging, and hiding behind trees along the shaded sidewalk. Kiva yelled, "Guys wait! I can't keep up!"
Stella slowed down and glanced back.
Kiva was almost a half block behind them. Normally, she would have been running right beside Stella with little trouble, but she swayed and suddenly dropped to her knees, gasping raggedly.
"Kiva!" Stella yelped, pivoting and bolting past Wain to her friend, "Are you ok?"
"Everything hurts…especially my throat. A-and my back," Kiva croaked, her voice a hoarse rasp. She doubled over, clutching her side.
"Do you need me to call someone?" Stella asked, helping her friend out of her heavy trench coat. It could be that she was just overheating.
"I-I don't know…" Kiva panted, shaking her head.
"What's wrong with your side?" Wain asked, concerned.
"It burns!" Kiva snapped.
"How much?" Stella asked.
"Throat’s a five, back’s a four, side’s an eight," Kiva muttered, tears of pain coming to her eyes.
Wain looked to Stella.
"Bad, really bad. For us ten is 'killing us' and a one is 'stings like salt'," Stella explained.
"Come on, let's get her onto the grass," Wain said, "Kiva, can you stand?"
"Not on my own," she winced.
"Ok then, Stella you…" Wain started.
"No," she cut in, shifting so she was only on one knee, "Kneel on my right side the same way I am; Stella you stand behind me in case I start to fall."
Wain did as she said and waited as Kiva rested for a second.
"Ok. Just brace your legs and back, otherwise you'll fall flat on your face," Kiva said before she motioned for Wain to take her left hand with his right. Then she draped her arm over his shoulders and grabbed onto his robes. "Turn a bit," she instructed. He did so then waited as she rested for a second more, "Ok, on the count of three try to stand."
Wain nodded, braced himself and took hold of Kiva’s right wrist with his left hand.
"One…two…three."
The two stood and Stella quickly steadied Kiva.
"Better?" they asked.
"A little, though not much," Kiva muttered as they helped her over onto a lawn.
"Well then just take it easy hmm." Wain said as Kiva carefully lay down on her jacket that Stella had generously spread out for her.
Kiva gave them a small thumbs up.
The three sat in silence for a long while, as Kiva tried to relax. Stella glanced down at her friend smiling slightly.
"Kiva," she said.
"What?" Kiva asked irritably.
"Have you been writing on your arms again?" she laughed softly.
"No," Kiva grunted, "I haven't done that in weeks.”
"Well your arms are covered in black runes hmm," Wain observed.
"Really?" Kiva asked, looking up wearily at her friends.
They nodded.
"Fuck it then, I'm too tired to give a damn," she grumbled, glancing at her tattooed arm.
Wain smiled and said, "Take it easy Hidan hmm."
Kiva smiled as she slowly began to feel better. "At least I don't have only three temper levels," she muttered.
"What are his three?" Stella asked.
Kiva smiled a bit and croaked, "Mad, pissed off, and fucking insane!"
The two laughed and seemed to relax a bit more now that Kiva was well enough to crack a joke.
"Hey Kiva," Stella said.
"Hmm?" Kiva muttered, turning her head to look at her friend.
"Remember in our role play when you stole Hidan's scythe because he took a set of your knives without asking?" Stella asked.
Kiva thought for a second then laughed and nodded, "Yeah, and he was looking for it for almost a week?"
Stella nodded, "Nearly tore the whole hideout apart looking for it."
"Yeah…he was not happy when he found out I had it," Kiva laughed, "Nearly killed me with the thing the second it was back in his hands!"
Wain looked at the girls curiously, "What hmm?"
The two looked at him and smiled.
"It was in our role play, a two person story. Her character’s name is Natasha, mine is named Laura," Kiva explained.
"Is that what you two pass back and forth during lunch hmm?" Wain asked, still hidden in the shadow of his wide brimmed hat.
Stella nodded, "Yep!"
"Do you have any of the sheets on you hmm?" he asked curiously.
Stella looked to Kiva, who unclipped the strap from her shoulder bag and shoved it towards Wain. "They're in there. The bunched bound in yarn are the ones I have yet to type. What I have done is in the…black folder with the dragon eyes looking at ya," she said.
Wain nodded and quickly found the folder and looked curiously inside it. "Wow, there must be over a hundred pages in here hmm!" he said in surprise.
"And fifty more coming," Kiva smiled.
"How long have you two been working on this hmm?" he asked, reading the first pages intently with a gleam in his eye.
"Uhh…" the girls said looking at each other uncertainly.
"I'd say…a good part of a year, maybe," Kiva said slowly.
"Yeah I think that'd be about right," Stella nodded.
Wain smiled, skimming the pages over. "It's very interesting," he said, "Well written too. How'd you ever think of doing something like this hmm?"
"Stella sort of started it. She was writing this story and I wanted to join, but she was too far along to fit me in correctly. So we started a different one," Kiva said sitting up carefully.
"Cool," Wain said, "Would you mind if I took this home?"
"Eeeeh…" Kiva muttered, "I don't know."
"Well that's ok hmm. I can just read as we walk."
Kiva smiled and nodded, at least she was feeling better now.

Chapter 7

"Any luck yet?"
"Sort of. They remember everything but," the student interrupted, sensing his leaders pleasure, "They don't think it all happened to them. They think it's all just a story they're making up."
"Indros are hard as stone when it comes to that which cannot be explained," the leader thought, "I wish I could say 'take your time' but if you don't jog their memories soon I may be forced to send in…"
"Nice hat dickweed!" someone yelled, honking their car’s horn as they drove by the student.
The student frowned and muttered something under their breath.
There was a sudden screeching of tires and as the car slammed on the brakes, swerving slightly as the driver fought to stay in control. There was also a muffled metallic thud and a sickening fleshy smack as a body hit the pavement.
"That ought to teach them…" the student sneered as the car’s driver and passenger scrabbled out of the metallic beast, looking around franticly for who ever they had hit.
"What's wrong? Hit a little bunny?" the student yelled over.
The driver didn't respond, only searched the road, ditch, and under his car franticly cursing as he did so.
"Did you hear me…"
"Yes I heard you. Sorry, had to deal with some disrespectful Indros," the student thought, "But him? Don't you think that's a little excessive? The man swears like a sailor and kills like Hitler after all."
"I've already made it perfectly clear to him, no sacrifices until you return. I do admit, even Indro adults don't swear as much as him," the leader thought, "But it may help them."
The student mulled that over and thought, "True…he is pretty forceful."
"That's why I'm hoping you can get this right," the leader thought with a hint of amusement, "By the way, the Spriggan will be making the Jump back here this morning so he can bring you a few of their belongings. Seeing some of it might provoke them to remember a little faster."
The student nodded. "I'll see what I can do."
